| In Tibetan Buddhism, the ritual bell is the symbol of the feminine and stands for wisdom. The dorje stands for the masculine aspect of the path to enlightenment. The skilful means aspect. Both are used together in ritual gestures during puja (group prayer, offertory service) and sadhana (individual method of self-realization). The bell and dorje used together are symbolic reflections of the duality of phenomenal reality. This combination of method (dorje) and wisdom (bell) is a basic principle of Tantrism.
Can be also be used in Shamanism to summon spirits; their sound represents the element of air, the realm of the spirits. In this case the bell is used alone and is often sounded by rubbing a stick round the edge; this produces a high singing tone
The strong, clear sound from the bell is often used in “space clearing”. This is done by going to each corner of a room and ringing the bell. The energy present in the room is dissolved in the vibration of the sound and the room will become more “open” and neutral.
IN SHAMANISM, THE BELL IS SOMETIMES SOUNDED BY RUBBING A STICK ROUND THE OUTSIDE EDGE PRODUCING A HIGH SINGING TONE. |
