A large bowl may be able to produce 4 or 5 tones. The tone that is emitted from your bowl will be partly depandant on the stick or beater that you use and partly the way that you use the stick or beater on your bowl. In this way it is important to have a selection of beaters. Also the surface on which you play your bowl is important. If you are not playing it in your hand, then the bowl must not move around and the surface must minimally absorb the sound. For example a soft cushion or a carpet with more than 3mm pile should not be used to play your bowl upon.
